It will never catch on

Description

In Middle Jurassic China, a Yi qi and an Anchiornis huxleyi pass each other, wondering how successful the gliding mechanism of their contemporary is.

It takes a truly baffling dinosaur for me to jump on the bandwagon, and Yi qi is complete bonkers. It´s a scansoriopterygid with preserved feathery plumage, but also a gliding membrane supported by a bony rod. Nobody would have ever predicted a feathered theropod that doesn´t use feathers, but skin to glide (well, except Dougal Dixon, of course: www.sivatherium.narod.ru/libra… ).

Who knows whether this means the other scansors actually were analogous to flying squirrels, too. And could an alternate universe have seen "bat-dinosaurs" as the dominant flying vertebrates?
