Description

The final episode of my own Walking with Beasts. Every Cenozoic documentary ought to end with an episode about man driving megafauna to extinction. I also wanted to feature the iconic fauna of the Ice Age, so this setting is based on the La Brea Tar Pits in California, 13.000 years ago.

Mammuthus columbi: With a shoulder height of 4 meters the Columbian Mammoth ist the largest elephant to ever walk North America. Traced over :iconrom-u:´s reconstruction: prehistoric-fauna.com/Columbia…
Mammut americanum: Because the iconic Wolly Mammoth didn´t live this far south the American Mastodon takes over as the hairy elephant role. With a shoulder height of 3 meters it is smaller than its mammoth contemporaries. Traced over a skeletal by Scott Hartman.
Bison antiquus: By far the most common herbivore of the late Ice Age, this prehistoric bison species is bigger than its modern cousin with a shoulder height of 2.3 meters. And if you ask why I didn´t use the biggest species, Bison latifrons, that species already died out between 30.000 and 20.000 years ago. Traced over :iconrom-u:´s reconstuction: prehistoric-fauna.com/Bison-an…
Megalonyx jeffersonii: A 3 meter long ground sloth. Ground sloths are another staple of any Cenozoic documentary, and the North American ones usually get ignored in favour of their South American cousins. Traced over :icontuxemperor:´s reconstruction: tuxemperor.deviantart.com/art/…
Smilodon fatalis: A 2.2 meter long powerful saber-toothed cat. Traced over :iconrom-u:´s reconstruction: prehistoric-fauna.com/Smilodon…
Panthera atrox: One of the largest cats of all time with a head-tail length of more than 3 meters. Traced over :iconrom-u:´s reconstruction: prehistoric-fauna.com/Panthera…
Canis dirus: By far the most numerous predator of this setting, this 1.6 meter long dog hunts in large packs. Traced over :iconrom-u:´s reconstruction: prehistoric-fauna.com/Canis-di…
Arctodus simus: The biggest predator of its environment, this bear is 3.5 meter tall when standing upright. Traced over :iconrom-u:´s reconstruction: prehistoric-fauna.com/Arctodus
Teratornis merriami: A meat-eating bird with a wingspan of 3.8 meters that feeds on small animals and carrion. Traced over this reconstruction: www.tarpits.org/sites/default/…
Homo sapiens: A 1.75 meter tall omnivore. Besides the climate change overhunting by humans will be the major factor in the extinction of Pleistocene megafauna. Traced over a photograph in the book „Monsters We Met“. I hope the respectable actor never finds this crude drawing of himself ^^;
